The Effectiveness of AI-Writing Tools (ChatGPT and Grammarly) in Enhancing Academic Writing among EFL University Students

Résumé

The recent employment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) inside English language classrooms has affected learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) in their learning. This research paper has focused on using AI-based tools to enhance academic writing for EFL students, such as Grammarly and ChatGPT. Various classroom applications and homework were conducted to evaluate students' grammatical accuracy and lexical diversity, as well as overall writing quality, after students used AI tools such as Grammarly and ChatGPT. The results indicate that Grammarly reduced students' mistakes and clarified them with explanations, while ChatGPT supports idea generation, paraphrasing, and academic style development. However, some problems may arise due to overreliance on using these tools. Moreover, these tools should be used under teacher control and as a complementary aid, not a replacement for human thinking. This study concluded that   while AI tools enhance certain aspects of writing skills, teacher feedback remains essential for developing higher-order skills
