Qalqalah sounds, Between scholars, Classical and ContemporaryAbstract
The sounds of qalqalah play a pivotal role in improving the pronunciation of the Holy Qur’an, as they help highlight the eloquence of Qur’anic expression and preserve its distinctive phonetic features. Modern phonetic studies have demonstrated that the qalqalah phenomenon achieves a form of linguistic economy by reducing the duration of vibration in the articulated sounds. This study examines the phenomenon and its causes, and discusses how it has been addressed by both early and modern scholars. Linguists and Qur’anic reciters agree that the qalqalah sounds are represented by the letters of the phrase “Qutb Jad” and that qalqalah occurs as a result of a disturbance at the point of articulation. However, modern scholars have provided a more precise description of the performance process, with the main difference among them lying in how they define its levels and whether it is an incidental or inherent characteristic of the sound.
