Abstract

The aim of this study is to give a brief overview about the extent of potential seasonal variation of phytoplankton genera in the coastal area of Tajoura (Libya) during 2007. Samples were collected across four field trips using a 55-micrometer mesh. The results revealed a marked variation in the composition of the plankton community between seasons, with the highest diversity recorded during fall and winter. This variation is attributed to changes in ocean currents, nutrient availability, and water column instability. Diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated the plankton community throughout the study period, and the presence of some toxic genera was also recorded. The study results indicate a clear influence of seasonal environmental factors on the distribution and diversity of phytoplankton, reinforcing the importance of continuing to monitor these environmental changes to understand the dynamics of coastal marine systems. The Sorenson index results also showed the highest similarity score for diatoms between fall and spring, and the lowest between summer and winter. Dinoflagellates recorded the highest similarity score between summer and autumn, while the lowest similarity score was between summer and spring.
